Being greater than yourself takes on many different meanings. What about an injustice put upon you? Is it forgiveness, justice, turn-the-other cheek or just move on? In the end, forgiveness and moving on will always make you a better person and is the rightful place to end. It’s the path to forgiveness that is the tricky part.
Do remember the story about United Airlines breaking Dave Carroll’s guitar then dismissing his concerns and reimbursement request? Dave wrote a song and its YouTube video went viral. In four days during this viral phenomenon, United stock prices dipped 10% costing the company to lose a value worth $180 million. Dave got screwed by the Goliath, stood up to him and taught corporate America and Dave a very valuable lesson.
And all United had to do was to admit their mistake, pay for the $1200 damage and apologize. That would have been the B>U thing to do. But, alas, they did the opposite and Dave did the B>U thing and became a greater person standing up for himself and inspiring others to do the same.
The lesson also taught individuals that they have the power to stand up for themselves. Self respect and justice are qualities that do make a person greater than themselves. While we here at B>U support the positive direction and reinforcement to be greater than themselves for a greater world, part of the mantra does include building self respect.
And many times your self respect is challenged by the arrogance, negativity and bullying of others. All of which represent a time to stand up to bullies for your own self respect to teach yourself to be greater than yourself and, hopefully, to teach those bullies to be greater than themselves and treat people with kindness and respect.
So next time you felt like you’ve been ‘screwed’ by a company or a person, take in consideration the multiple effects on yourself, those around you and the bully and stand up for yourself.
Just another B>U observation about being greater than yourself when challenged.
